Berkeley Town Centre

Lichen Studio is appointed by Berkeley Town Council to develop a public realm and placemaking strategy in collaboration with Atkins for the regeneration of the Town Centre of Berkeley.

Creating a people-centred place at the heart of Berkeley Town, where community and social cohesion is promoted. Prioritising pedestrians and cyclists in the town centre and creating an accessible place for all users, fostering a sense of civic pride for Berkeley.

The Berkeley Regeneration Project has been under development for a number of years. However, with the recent funding commitment from Stroud District Council (SDC), the project is now progressing. The redesign of the historic Market Place and immediate vicinity, will activate the public realm and create opportunities for events and a local market.

The project objectives are to; Improve road safety and reduce speeding, Improve accessibility, and pedestrian confidence in shopping safely, Encourage and support active travel through both utility and leisure cycling. Improve cyclist confidence in safely moving through the town centre, Support observed and projected growth from additional housing and businesses, and strategic growth, commensurate with the emerging local plan, with the infrastructure required for a rapid growth in population and commuting.
